Barbara Pickut MD, MPH has her expertise in the differential diagnosis of the individual with movement disorders and parkinsonism and a passion in improving the health and wellbeing of people seeking her care and particularly, people with Parkinson’s (PwP). Her open and holistic evaluation serves to meet the needs of PwP where they are be it at diagnosis or during the progression of symptoms and to offer compassionate integrative cutting edge therapy. She is Associate Professor of Translations Science and Molecular Medicine at Michigan State University.

Abstract:

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease with unclear etiopathogenesis and no cure or established secondary prevention. PD is believed to be an exclusively human disease possibly related to a disproportionate expansion of the neocortex resulting in maladaptive bioenergetic stress on vulnerable, relatively less evolved, subcortical structures leading to brain pathology and aging. Significant emotional stress has been implicated as a risk factor in developing PD, although the mechanisms are not clea. Higher levels of psychological stress are clinically related to increased motor and non-motor symptom severity in PD. Secondary to psychological stress in PD, a decline in social relationships, anhedonia, a need for more social support are implicated. How acute or chronic stress is additive to heightened biogenetic stress within subcortical structures remains to be seen. Several environmental and lifestyle factors and mechanisms are suspected to play a role in PD. A widely held hypothesis of the underlying cause of disease progression, known as the prion hypothesis in PD, describes the peripheral seeding and centripetal disease progression of alpha-synuclein, which is a hallmark neuropathological finding in PD. There is growing preliminary evidence indicating that diet and nutrition may both impact the risk of developing PD, as well as play a neuroprotective role. Precise mechanisms for possible vectors introducing the pathology to the nervous system is of great interest. In an attempt to assuage the suffering in People with Parkinson’s (PwP) and to offer a more participatory health care approach, we suggest that a complementary and alternative medicine be considered. Preliminary evidence exists for Mindfulness Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Group effect, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, yoga and in addition, fundamental attention should be given to diet and nutritional supplements as possible viable interventions in the holistic treatment in PwP.

Abstract:

Spagyrics or plant alchemy has been regarded as a cultural tradition, the purpose of the spagyric treatment is to dissolve the internal powers of a plant through the respective mixture of the purified three basic alchemical principles salt, sulphur and mercury and make them therapeutically usable as a medicinal force. Od force is the cosmic life force that animates and circulates throughout creation; natural electromagnetic energy of the infinite universe consisting of positive, negative and neutral charges which build and sustain the human body and all other matter. Everyone is surrounded by an electromagnetic field, and this field is called an aura. The aura has been depicted throughout history in literature and paintings. Angel pictures show it as a halo; pictures of Jesus often depict a light around his head. Auras are not unique to angels and religious leaders, however; a field of energy surrounds us all. This is called prana in Ayurveda, meaning primary energy. It is sometimes translated as breath or vital force, though it is more than these. This life force energy is represented as qi (chi) in traditional Chinese medicine. The homeopathic notion of the vital force is a spirit-like essence that animates a living organism. In homeopathy, the disease is considered to originate as a disruption of the vital force. Symptoms produced are thought to reflect the nature of the disruption. It is an innate intelligence that is not entirely physical or spiritual. As there is order to the universe based on energy, so must our internal order or vital force energy be in balance. When it is not, disease results and symptoms develop. Symptoms of the disease are an outer expression of our inner disrupted vital force. These symptoms are helpful clues to which areas of our body need attention. The body can heal itself and this knowledge is within all of our cells or neuro-immuno-endocrine system as physiologists say. Most traditional healing practices posited that disease was the result of some imbalance in the vital energies which distinguish living from non-living matter. Alchemical practices and philosophy can be found in all the world’s great traditional medical systems like Ayurveda, siddha, spagyric medicine, etc. In this article, the author traces the source and relationship of spagyrics with sacred Hindu tantric philosophy (Sexual Alchemy) and practices, and the extent to which they contributed to significant changes in medical science.

Abstract:

Object: To acquire a better therapeutic prescription against opportunistic fungal infection for patients with immuno-deficient or immuno-inhibitory diseases, the analysis on etiological fungi purified from the cutaneous and mucous membrane lesions of diagnosed 59 patients with secondary mycoses and then the effective study of traditional medical (TCM) differentiated treatment including acupuncture-moxibustion (acu-Mox.) and herbal formulas on them were made.

Methods: It included the purifying test of fungal species from diagnosed 59 patients’ sample (lesions, serum-cerebral-spinal fluid and excretion) by in the laboratory, the compared relationship between etiological fungi and initial disorders that caused the secondary mycoses, TCM differentiated diagnoses and prescribed acupuncture-Mox., and herbal treatment on them, and finally statistical analysis on the pre- and post-treatment of the differentiated therapy.

Results: The statistical analysis of the results between pre- and post- TCM differentiated therapy on each group of 59 patients with opportunistic mycoses showed that the effective cure percent of 15 cases with malignant tumor was 95.03±0.53%, of 21 cases who took long-term corticosteroid and antibiotics medication 96.05±1.32%, of 5 cases with Kwashiorkor disease- like malnutrition 93.02±0.52%, of 3 cases with HIV infection 98.05±1.37% and of 15 cases with type 2-Diabetes mellitus 91.07±1.22%, and all groups acquired significant improvement of their health state after finished the ant-fungal treatment including antifungal chemical and TCM differentiated therapies. Conclusion: The results suggested that TCM differentiated therapy worked on not only eradicating external and internal pathogenic factors of antifungal treatment but also improvement of physical (anti- pathogenic-Qi) righteousness-related systemic health. So it may be a reasonable choice for clinically anti- opportunistic fungal program.

Abstract:

Today’s topic demonstrates the consequences of stress on health. Nowadays, it is considered that controlling stress is the best alternative medicine. This article is going to explain how stress affects human body.

Stress and illness: The amount of stress and the ability to cope with it affect one’s physical health. Greater the level of stress, greater is the risk of illness. For example, one is likely to catch a cold or flu when one is trying to deal with the higher levels of anxiety. There is also a proof that stress can exacerbate ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, insulin dependent diabetes, multiple sclerosis name a few.

The need to manage stress: If one is living with greater levels of stress then the entire well-being is at risk. Stress has deleterious effect on the emotional stability, as well as physical state. It reduces the capability to analyse clearly, perform effectively and enjoy life.

Remedies to overcome stress

• Avoid intoxicants like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.

• Alcohol is a tranquillizer when taken in large quantities, but acts as an agent of stimulation taken in smaller proportions.

• Engaging in physical activities/ outdoor pursuits: Stressful situations raise the rate of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortical in your body.

• Get sufficient sleep:

• Apply Relaxation methods: Every day, attempt to relax with a stress reduction strategy. There are varied trusted methods to lower down the stress level therefore, try a few and work out what is best for you.

Biography:

Background: The aim of this study was to an evaluation in vivo antimicrobial effects of polyherbal-made toothpaste and mouthwash to form effervescent tablet containing the extracts of Artemisia dracunculus, Satureja khuzestanica and Myrtus communis against oral pathogenic microorganisms (Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus salivarious, Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans).

Methods: This study was a clinical trial without control (Before–After test) that were performed on 20 volunteers, healthy with normal gums without bleeding or inflammation. Twenty volunteers will be given herbal toothpaste and asking from them to wash their mouths by sterile deionized water, pour the contents of their mouth into the sterile container as samples of before test. Then asked them to use brushing their teeth with herbal toothpaste. The next morning again asked from the same volunteers to wash their mouths by deionized water for one minute and pour the contents of their mouth into another sterile container as a sample of after test. Then the samples transferred to the laboratory immediately. Aliquots of 100µl of each sample inoculated on Petri dishes containing blood agar for bacteria and Sabouraud dextrose agar for Candida albicans. Then colonies counted before and after test, separately. This process was repeated for the herbal effervescent tablets mouthwash by other 20 volunteers with the same condition.

Results: According to the laboratory results, the Candida albicans was isolated from all the voluntaries. The scores of colony growth decreased significantly between before-after test during the study (p<0.001).

Conclusion: The results were revealed that polyherbal toothpaste and mouthwash could be effective for the prevention of dental caries in the future.

Abstract:

Fertility in mammalian females is dependent on the growth of follicles, structural units consisting of an oocyte, granulosa cells, and theca cells with an extracellular matrix separating the cell layers. The ovaries play the key roles in reproduction and any impairment in their functions can result in either sterility or infertility. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays a very important role in health keeping. Alternative holistic therapies, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, offer less invasive and less costly physical and emotional treatment compared with standard Western medical treatment. However, awareness of TCM therapy for infertility is generally low and often not suggested by Western Medical practitioners. Western medical treatment could depress the blood pressure rapidly and surely through reducing blood volume and dilating blood vessels, while traditional medicine (TM) shows its superiorities in alleviating clinical symptoms, improving patients' quality of life, lessening or reversing the damage on terminal organs and preventing the occurrence of a serious complication. Herbal leisure, also named Chinese Motherwort or Siberian Motherwort, belongs to the Labiatae family in the plant kingdom. Native to China, central Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia, it is now naturalized in Japan, Java, Malaysia, and North America. Radix Salvia miltiorrhizae (RSM), the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, is one of the most widely used traditional herbal medicines for the treatment of a variety of conditions. It is commonly used either alone or in combination with other herbs in traditional Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of numerous ailments, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, stroke, renal diseases, and diabetes, peripheral and pulmonary vascular disease. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) used in this study to induced infertility of female Wister rats IP injection , many parameters were conducted in this study to evaluated the treatment using Chinese herbs mentioned above these parameters include (FSH, LH, E2, INH-B, INH-A) and quantitative gene expression of (Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP-1, 2) and Sterile motif alpha domain containing 3 (Smad3). Conclusion the study approved using a combination of Herba leonuri and Radix salviae miltiorrhizae provided optimum treatment of female infertility through repairing the ovarian function and adjustment the levels of hormones to the normal values, maintain the endocrine mechanism related to the reproduction and the ovarian functions by increase the quality and numbers of developing follicles due to augmentation of the molecules referring to increasing the numbers and maturation of the follicles (Inhibins, hormones, MMP1, 2 and the Newly aspect approves through positive effects on expression of Smad3 gene in the ovarian tissue.
